Roylott is the last living heir to the Roylott aristocracy. Sherlock Holmes is known for his intuition, and his ability to make quick, rational deductions from what he sees and hears. This confusion of the word band, and the general unspoken racial prejudice among the characters in the story, causes Sherlock Holmes to mistakenly follow it as a lead early in the case. She informs Holmes that today the estate is down to a few scrubby acres containing a two hundred year old house, where she lives with her stepfather, Dr. The story’s titular speckled band, a phrase which Julia utters as she dies in Helen’s arms, is first presumed to refer to the band of gipsies. Miss Stoner recounts the history of the once wealthy and important Roylott family, who, in the last four generations, have become self-indulgent spendthrifts, shrinking the family fortune until it was finally all gambled away. She tells Watson and Holmes that her stepfather is descended from one of the oldest families in England, the Roylotts of Stoke Moran. The visitor at last gives her name: Helen Stoner.
